Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding can be caused not just by stress and anxiety but by sleep disorders, an abnormal bite or teeth that are missing, tipped or out of alignment.

The symptoms of teeth grinding include:

  • Dull headaches
  • Jaw soreness
  • Teeth that are sensitive, painful or loose
  • Flat or fractured teeth

Your dentist can fit you with a custom mouth guard to protect your teeth during sleep. Sometimes these mouthguards can also be worn during the day when needed, such as while driving or exercising if you tend to clench during these activities. Mouth guards are important to help prevent chipping, cracking and wear in your teeth. These fractures in the enamel can allow bacteria to enter causing cavities. Chipping or breaking the teeth from grinding can result in the need for crowns.

A bite guard is a dental appliance custom-fit to a patient’s teeth. Bite guards serve varying purposes and are often recommended for use in patients of all ages. It is important that bite guards be professionally fit, rather than purchased over the counter, as this ensures maximum comfort and protection during wear. Professional dental guards are usually prepared in a dental lab using an oral impression taken in a dental office. These guards are created uniquely to each patient to prevent discomfort, slippage or inadequate protection.
